G. Love and Special Sauce | 10.21.11 Down and Dirty with G. Love: Always Take the Gig

October 21st, 2011

“Always take the gig. Always take the gig. Breathe in deep, now breathe out all the way and repeat. Doesn’t that feel nice? Always take the gig. It’s a goddamn mantra repeat and repeat again. Ommmmmmmmmm always take the damn gig. After being berated as grown men for over-partying, we were of course absolutely defensive and found many ways/excuses to continue our belligerency. Scott said brilliantly,” I look at it like this, if I stay home I know exactly what’s going to happen, when you go out anything could happen”. Spoken like a true networker and connector I wholeheartedly agreed. When you’re out on the town, out on the gig, anything can happen. You could fall down drunk on your face or you could meet someone with an opportunity that could change your life or career. Of course this is not carte blanche for excessive partying. In fact It’s just the opposite. What I’m saying is this. You will often have a choice, to take time off or to gig, to watch a show or play a show, to go to a party or entertain the party? These choices can and will shape your career as a musician.” Read the rest of G’s blog HERE!

G. Love and Special Sauce | 10.10.11 Rombello Rap – 10/10/2011

October 10th, 2011

Well every couple of years we get to do something crazy fun. Aight aight well it’s crazy fun every night out here on the road but the Rombello cruise was killer. We were joined by Slightly Stoopid, Michael Franti, Brett Dennen, Citizen Cope, JJ Grey and Mofro, Soja and a whole lot of other dope Bands and DJ’s for a four day cruise from Tampa, FL to Cozumel, Mexico. Slamming! These types of gigs are really amazing. I would have to say that aside from getting to see some of my favorite acts perform, the best parts are what’s happens off the stage. The late night jams and hang sessions we all shared. Jamming on the late night with Cope and Brett Dennen, chilling with the Stoopids and just vibing out all day and night. That really made it for me! There were tons of collaborations. Karl Denson and I sat in with Franti.  Timo and I sat in with SS for Devils Door and an Everything You Need/Mellow Mood mash up.  I sat in with Brett Dennen on harp.  Miles and I jammed Baby I Like It acoustic. The sit in’s were nonstop. The musical community that’s formed and solidified on these types of gigs was just outstanding.  You can’t beat it. As I write this I am now remembering C Money, Cope and I singing a dope ass hook “for the love of money” into my phone at my B Day party. I’m telling you so many jams and collaborations are going to come out of this in the coming year. Just watch! Now I’m back on dry land and I’ve quit smoking. Which is good cause I want to live and bring this music to you till I’m at least 125 years old. Come on now! Tonight I’m in Birmingham and headed north to hometown Philly, NYC, DC and Boston. It’s going to be bangin playing the East Coast stomping grounds. We’ve got a real special show for y’all so get on out to the shows and we will see you soon. Thanks for dropping by.  Your friend, G

G. Love and Special Sauce | 10.07.11 Down and Dirty with G. Love: Open Tunings

October 7th, 2011

“The last two blogs have been dedicated to some of the great slide guitar players past and present who have influenced me over the years. This week I thought it could be helpful to show y’all some of the tunings that these players use. Open tunings present a myriad of possibilities to achieve unique and original sounds. Try the ones in my video, create your own or Google open tunings. There are endless possibilities here. Remember, be original; that’s the key to success as a player and a performer.” Watch G.Love’s Down and Dirty video on open tunings HERE!

G. Love and Special Sauce | 09.20.11 Down and Dirty with G. Love: Slide Guitar Greats

September 20th, 2011

“Slide guitar. It’s a thing, man, a real type of thing. When you play that slide, you can really make that guitar talk, you can really make it sing. My favorite slide guitar players are the players who are from and/or play in that Mississippi Delta style. When I first heard the legendary John Hammond perform live, I was absolutely blown away by his slide work. John typically uses an old National resophonic guitar for his slide numbers and man can he play. If you’ve been reading my blogs or have ever seen me perform, you know by now that John Hammond has had major influence on my playing. Through his records I was introduced to a world of blues.” Read the rest of this week’s Guitar World’s Down and Dirty with G. Love HERE

G. Love and Special Sauce | 09.15.11 Down and Dirty with G. Love: How to Be a Band Leader (Not a Band Tyrant)

September 15th, 2011

“Let’s face it, friends: Being in a band is like being part of a very, very, very dysfunctional family. Like any marriages, businesses or things you love, it takes love, work, vision, direction and effort to keep it going. There are always exceptions to the rule; however, I find that bands work best when they are lead by one. And before you start in on me and my ego, please think back to the time you were in the van with the fellas trying to decide if it was Micky D’s or Burger King en route to the gig in Topeka.” Read the rest of this week’s Guitar World’s Down and Dirty with G.
